There are some greyhounds that it is very difficult to find loving homes for. These lovely dogs continue to be loved and cared for by the team at PRG. This page is for the greyhound that cannot find homes and the people who cannot adopt one.

Portsmouth Retired Greyhounds will never put healthy dog to sleep.  But sometimes healthy dogs cannot be adopted.  It may be because they have grown too old, or they may be too anxious when taken away from the kennel that they think of as home.  But these dear old lads and lasses still need love and affection and sometimes extra care and veterinary costs as they get older.  There is a small army of volunteers who come up to the kennel whenever they can to take the dogs out for walks.  These volunteers give something beyond value to the dogs.  And of course it's nice to have a special relationship with a dog even if you can't take it home.  Sponsorship is a way if creating and building a special relationship with a dog.

Ali

Ali is a dear 10 year old girl who's always pleased to see people.  She shares her kennel with Foxy, an old gentleman who's also one of our sponsordogs.  Together they are like an old married couple.

FOXY

Foxy is a lovely 10 year old chap who loves some attention, strokes and cuddles.

TED

(photo arriving soon)

Ted is a lovely chap who really, really wants to get on with people, but he's very, very nervous and anxious with people he doesn't know.  It would be lovely for Ted to have his own special person who would take the time to slowly get to know him and gain his trust and friendship.

ED

Ed is a truly lovely boy with a truly tragic story.  He was out for a walk with his owner/trainer when he was set upon and mauled by a pit bull terrier type of dog.  Ed could do nothing because he was muzzled.  This ended his racing career but with the best of veterinary care he made a full physical recovery, however he was very nervous even when his wounds healed.  He was very close to his owner but tragedy layered upon tragedy and Ed's owner died of a heart attack about half an hour after the attack.  Nobody really knew how dear Ed would cope with a complete change of surroundings and being cared for by new people when he arrived at PRG, but one particular member of staff made it her mission to restore love and trust to Ed's life.  She sat with him for hours, asking nothing, expecting nothing, just waiting until Ed trusted her enough to go to her.  Now Ed is a happy dog again and whilst he could be adopted by somebody, it would have to be somebody who really understands what it is to adopt a dog that has been damaged in body, mind and spirit.  Perhaps having a sponsor to be a special person for him would help him to continue to trust people again.
